Dogs rarely bite "out of nowhere". They give a sequence of signals, and handlers who recognise them can de-escalate early.
Calming signals
- Lip licking and yawning
- Turning the head away
- Slow, deliberate movement
- Sniffing the ground mid-interaction
Warning signals
- Stiff body and closed mouth
- Raised hackles
- Hard stare and forward lean
- Growling (a gift — it is communication, not defiance)
What to do
Increase distance, remove the trigger, and give the dog an escape route. Never punish a growl — you remove the warning, not the feeling.
Learn the signals and you will handle far more situations safely.
