A K9 unit is only as effective as the system around it. Use this checklist before deployment.
1. Risk assessment
Define what the dog is expected to detect or deter. Be specific — vague goals produce vague results.
2. Site survey
Map entry points, patrol routes, lighting, and safe zones. The dog must have a clear job.
3. Handler selection
Choose handlers who are calm, consistent, and physically able. Vet certification and references.
4. Welfare plan
Rest cycles, nutrition, veterinary access, and shade. A tired dog is a liability.
5. Reporting
Document every deployment, review incidents monthly, and retrain quarterly.
Get these right and the K9 unit becomes a genuine deterrent, not decoration.
